The Estonian-Latvian co-operation project "Est-Lat urban activists" is initiated by Linnalabor (EE) and the developers of SocMap (LV) with the aim of bringing together the neighbouring countries’ experts of everything urban. The cooperation project consists of Est-Lat urbanists' summer days in 2011, a study trip to Riga for Estonian participants and a study trip to Tartu for Latvian participants in 2012.
On July 19th Regina, Teele and Kerli from Linnalabor will tell the Finns everything about urban actions in the Baltics. The event is scheduled at the heart of the World Design Capital Helsinki - in the Pavilion (Paviljonki in Finnish) situated in the courtyard of the Museum of Architecture and Museum of Design.
The title BALTIC (activism) BOOM gives some hints about what we will present. No, there is no baby boom in the Baltics... But luckily enough, there appears to be a new wave of hip grassroot initiatives that strive for cultural and systemic changes in the urban environment. We will present how the similar problems, often arising from the post-socialist and young democracy context, are dealt with in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. After the presentation we will show the best Estonian movie of 2011 called "Uus Maailm" which documents the everyday life of a neighbourhood movement, and at the same time describes juicefully the joys and sorrows of civic movements in general.
Check the programme on Paviljonki's website and be in Helsinki on 19th of July!
